A stake tied to a young tree is sized exactly right the day it's cut, holding the sapling upright while its roots find their grip. Nobody schedules a return visit, so the tie stays the same size while the trunk keeps widening, until the growth that should move freely past it starts growing around it instead. The same happens with a coping capacity built correctly at one age and never revisited as the person it was built for kept growing past it.
